Chapter Text
It all started in a lab in an unknown hidden location, an anti demi-humans movement were working an experiment that is supposed to turn all demi-humans into regular humans, but something went wrong and a vapor of some kind went into the air, with none of the members able to stop it.
At Duel Academy, Syrus, who was still a bit weird out from Jaden's Duel against Orlando earlier that day, was currently getting ready for bed.
He was glad that the GX Tournament was only happening in the daytime. If it happened during the night as well, he would hardly get any sleep. 'And my secret wouldn't be a secret anymore when the full moon comes around.' He thought as he finished brushing his teeth. Once he finished getting ready for bed, he returned to the dorm room he shared with Jaden and, Hassleberry. 'I still can't believe that muscle-head thinks he could take my position as Jaden's best friend.' He thought, growling slightly, as he climbed into the middle bunk.
But as everyone on Duel Academy Island slept that night, many of them tossed around, moaning and groaning, in their beds.
By morning, Syrus was sleeping peacefully, which was the only time he would ever get peace during the GX Tournament, when.....
"AAHH!!"
At the sound of the scream, both Syrus and Hassleberry were so startled that they both fell out of bed!
"Jaden, what happened!?" Syrus asked as he and Hassleberry stood up.
But when they saw why Jaden screamed, they could understand why he screamed.
Jaden was standing in front of the mirror they had in their room. And he had a pair of red fox ears twitching on top of his head, behind him was a twitching, bushy fox tail with a black tip, his nose was now slightly fox-like, his feet were fox paws, and his hands were covered in black fur while his fingers were covered in white fur, his nails were even fox claws.
"Jaden, what happened to you?" Syrus asked after seeing his friend with fox features. "I don't know, I just woke up like this." Jaden said, his ears pressed against his heart in slight distress. But they perked up a bit in curiosity as he looked at Syrus. "Umm..... Why are you staring at him?" He asked the brown haired Slifer. He then noticed that Hassleberry was staring at him as well.
And the stares were getting on his nerves!
'Don't lose your cool! Don't lose your cool! Don't lose your cool!' Syrus thought to himself, trying to stay calm. "Well...?" He asked.
"You might want to look in the mirror." Jaden said.
Syrus, wondering why Jaden and Hassleberry were staring at him, did just that. When he looked in the mirror and saw that he had similar features as Jaden, but instead of fox ears, tail, nose, paws, and claws, Syrus' were a grey wolf's, he also now saw that his hands were covered in grey fur. 'What.....?' Syrus thought in shock when he saw the wolf features. 'I thought Billie said that these features would come out unless I want them to.'
"What in the world happened to us?" Jaden asked as he looked at his new fox tail.
"I wonder if this happened to anyone else on the island." Hassleberry wondered, a question all three of them were now wondering.
*SCREAMS*
At the sounds of the screams of Jasmine and Mindy, the trio, after getting dressed(with Jaden and Syrus no longer able to wear shoes or socks), quickly ran to Chazz's personalized Slifer Dorm room where Jasmine, Mindy, and Atticus, as well as Ms. Fontaine, have been staying since the Obelisk Dorm became the Society of Light's personal dorm/base, to see what was wrong.
When they got there, they saw that, while Ms. Fontaine was still fully human, Jasmine, Mindy, and Atticus weren't.
Jasmine now had a blue mermaid tail with golden edges of her betta fish-like tail-fin.
Mindy now had pale purple and pale blue tabby stripped cats ears, tail, and paws for feet, her eyes were now cat-like, she had fur that matched her ears and tail on her cheeks and arms, and her nails looked like they were now retractable claws as well. This made Syrus realized that she was now a cat beastkin demi-human.
But Atticus was the most surprising. Because he had dark blue fur covered dragon wings with golden tips, a similar dragon tail slightly swishing behind him, dark blue scales on the sides of his face, long and pointy ears, dark brown horns on top of his head, his hands were covered in dark blue scales, and his feet were now dark blue scaled and golden clawed dragon talons. This clearly meant that he was now a dragon beastkin demi-human.
But they were freaking out because of the mirror on one side of the room, which was now shimmering in a way Syrus hasn't seen in a long time. 'But the question is, will whoever come out from it be a friend, or foe?' Syrus wondered, his ears pressed against his hair, his claws ready to fight if he needed to.
"This better be the right dorm. And if one more person in mainly white clothing challenges us to one more duel, despite us saying that we don't duel, I'm placing a hex on them!" Said a medium-toned skinned girl, who looked to be around their age, with brown hair and eyes, looking like she's from African/Italian/Indigenous Latina/American heritage, wearing a black long sleeve shirt with a rip at the collar, a dark purple short-sleeve crop-jacket with a regular purple inside, light teal-colored jeans, and boot-like sneakers that match the color of her jacket. In her hand was a brown wand with a crystal at the top.
"Billie?" Syrus said after seeing the girl.
"Syrus? Yes! Made it to the right dorm!" The girl, now known as Billie, said.
"All it did was take you three tries to find the right one." Said a young man, a few years older than them, with dark brown hair, hazel eyes, and wearing a simple white shirt, red short-sleeved jacket, slightly dark blue jeans, and black boots that went slightly passed his ankles.
"Roman, quite complaining. At least she got us here." Said a girl with medium-toned skin with black hair in a bun held in place by a butterfly ponytail, wearing a rose-red shirt, black skirt, thigh-high white socks, a black band on one leg, and black small-heeled shoes.
"Roman! Winter!" Syrus said, couldn't believe what he was seeing. "What are you guys doing here?" He asked, completely forgetting he wasn't the only one in the room.
"It's not just them!" Said a blond haired boy with green eyes slightly hidden by his bowl-cut bangs, he wore a, orange sleeveless sweater jackets over a lighter orange short-sleeved shirt, blue jeans with a chain on one side, he had wolf features like Syrus, but tan instead of grey, as he stepped out of the mirror.
"Surprise." Said a medium-toned skin young man with spiky brown hair that was styled in a way that looked like flames and amber-colored eyes, he wore a black short-sleeved shirt with red and yellow flame designs, red shorts with orange flames on the sides and white flames on the ends, and black sneakers with yellow details and orange laces.
"Wally! Lanny!" Syrus said as he spotted the two boys.
"And it's like we're not even here." Hassleberry said as he saw Syrus interacted with the group, completely forgetting about his fellow Duel Academy students, and one of the teachers/staff members, were also in the room.
"Don't forget your 'WHAA!' Crew." Said a girl with brown hair and brown eyes, wearing a purple shirt, black skirt, a black and purple lace choker necklace with two amethyst gemstones on the front, black fingerless lace gloves with purple ribbons, and black combat-ish boots with purple laces.
"I can't believe we came here through a mirror." Said a girl with brown eyes and brown hair, wearing a red crop top with one off-the-shoulder short-sleeve, blue jeans, and brown boot-like sneakers.
"Since it didn't feel like we learned what a milkshake feels like when the shake part is put into it, it wasn't a Van Helsing Prison Mirror. So, good news." Said a medium-toned skin young man with brown eyes and hair, who wore a black and green striped shirt, dark blue jeans with some rips, a black beanie with a claw pin on it, a necklace with a silver ring on it, and white and red sneakers.
"I still say that there is something off on Duel Academy Island!" Said a boy with glowing, transparent blue skin, brown hair and eyes, and wearing a black short-sleeved shirt, blue ripped jeans, and black boots.
"Vee! Sophie! Elijah! Demi!"
Syrus couldn't believe it. Ten of his first friends were here in Chazz's dorm room. "Wait. Why are you guys here?" He asked them. "We'll explain that after we get that poor mermaid in a portable pool." Billie said before she used her wand to summon a pool, that seemed to be made of glass or something similar, with special wheels and filled with water. Syrus then turned to his friends and noticed that Jasmine wasn't looking too good.
'I completely forgot they were here!' He thought as he and Elijah worked together to pick up Jasmine and place her in the pool.
"So.... Who are these people?" Atticus asked Syrus.
"They're old friends of mine." Syrus said. He then turned to the people that came out of the mirror.
"This is Billie Russo and her cousin, Roman Russo, and yes, they're related to Max Russo, the sandwich tycoon." Syrus said as he introduced the two cousins. "We're also wizards, which you probably guessed." Billie said as used her wand to summon a floating disco ball in the center of the ceiling. "Though I'm more responsible with my magic then Billie is." Roman said as he used his own wand to send the disco ball back to wherever it came from. "And this is Winter." Syrus said, introducing the last of the Staten Island trio. "I'm just a normal human. Nothing special." She explained to them.
"This is Wally." Syrus said as he introduced the blond teen. "Used to be a normal human. But I got bitten by a werewolf while I was walking home. And that led to a dormant wizard gene in my family to awaken in me, which led me to, eventually, going to Staten Island so Roman's dad/Billie's uncle can teach me how to control my wizard powers." Wally explained to them. "And this is Lenny." Syrus introduced the African/American. "I have fire powers, which I inherited from my dad. Long story about him and how me and Wally know each other. But I met Syrus, as well as Vee, Sophie, Elijah, and Demi at Wilson Hall." Lenny said.
"Wait! Wilson Hall? As in the performing arts boarding school?" Atticus said.
"Yeah. I went there until my third year of middle school." Syrus explained to them. "We'll get back to that later."
"Either way, this is Vee." Syrus said as he introduced the rest of the Wilson Hall group. "Hi! It's so great to see that Syrus has more friends besides us, and Milo, who currently at home, doing schoolwork from what Billie and Roman told me! He doesn't have many friends. Am I talking excitedly? No, I can't be. Because if I was..." Before she could finish, she grew a pair of vampire fangs. "....My vampire powers fritz." She finished. "Either way...." Syrus said. "this is Sophie, who you all probably know better as DJ PJ." Syrus said. "Yeah! I love her DJ beats!" Mindy said. "This is Elijah Van Helsing Summers." Syrus said. "And before you say anything, yes, as in the monster hunter Van Helsings. But I don't hunt monsters, well, except for evil monsters. Like that conflict vampire Lucien." Elijah explained to them. "And this is Demi. As you can tell, he's a ghost. And he can't be a bit of a worrywart." Syrus said. "Hey!" Demi said, clearly offended. "You know it's true." Billie said.
"Wait, Sy, how do you know a vampire, ghost, two wizards, someone with fire powers, and someone who was turned into a werewolf with wizard powers?" Jaden asked his best friend.
"Can I answer after we see if anyone else on the island got turned into demi-humans or something like that?" Syrus asked as he quickly left the room.
"Wait! Syrus! That was what we came here to tell you!" Billie said as she and the others, except for Ms. Fontaine, Jasmine, and Mindy, quickly followed Syrus.
Syrus decided to check on Aster first because he was the most reasonable Pro right now(with him not knowing where Zane was still), and he didn't want to deal with the members of the Society of Light.
When he got to Aster's yacht, he was surprised at what kind of demi-human the silver haired Pro Duelist/Duel Academy student was. But Syrus also couldn't help laughing.
Because Aster was a phoenix beastkin demi-human(with Syrus laughing because Aster's last name was 'Phoenix' and he was now a phoenix demi-human). He had a pair of silvery-blue phoenix wings on his back, his ears were now slightly longer and pointier with feathers that matched the ones on his wings behind them, his hands were now scaled with small black claws like phoenix talons, and he had silvery-blue phoenix tail-feathers with some of the ones that look like peacock tail-feathers having red colored tips.
When the others arrived, they all had the same reaction as Syrus when they saw that Aster was now a phoenix demi-human.
"Will you all stop laughing?" Aster said to them, clearly irritated and slightly embarrassed. "It's not that funny." He then looked at his new wings and his transformed hands. Even though he wouldn't admit it, he could see the irony of the fact that his last name was 'Phoenix' and he was now part phoenix.
Once they all calmed down, they left Aster's yacht to find that Chazz, Alexis, and Bastion waiting for them.
But Alexis was now a dragon beastkin demi-human, like her brother. But she had blue wings with golden-yellow, light blue, and light golden-yellow feathers, she had blue scales of the side of her arms with golden-yellow feather-like scales at her elbows, she had dragon talons for feet with blue scales that went up her legs, with some golden-yellow scales on the sides, dark blue claws for finger and toe nails, she had a blue tail with some patches of golden-yellow and a feathered fin tail-tip, she had blue scales on the side her neck and cheeks, ruffs of blue and light blue feathers behind her slightly longer and pointy ears, slight curved at the tips very pale blue horns sticking out of her hair, and her eyes were dragon-like.
And Chase was now a black panther beastkin demi-human, with black fur that covered his whole hand, except for his fingers, and most likely part of his arms, his nails were now naturally black(with Syrus and the others easily guessing that they were now special retractable claws like Mindy's), his feet were now black panther claws, he had a black panther tail twitching behind his and black panther ears twitching on top of his head, and he had black fur on his cheeks that were stripe patterns.
Bastion was the only one of the three that was still human.
But the fact that Chazz and Alexis were still wearing their Society of Light uniforms showed that they were still under whatever brainwashing spell Sartorius put them under. And the two of them somehow becoming demi-humans didn't free them. 'Whatever brainwashing they're under is stronger than I thought. Then any of us thought.' Syrus thought with worry.
"Okay, what do you three want?" Billie asked them.
"Stay out of this!" Chazz said, with a slight growl in his voice. "This is between us and our fellow Duel Academy students."
'Sounds like becoming a demi-human freed Chazz from whatever Sartorius did to brainwash him a little.' Syrus thought, recognizing the tone Chazz used every time he was angry before he got brainwashed, even though there was now a growl in it. "What is it, Chazz?" Syrus asked him. "We know you did something to turn two/thirds of the Society of Light into half creatures." Alexis said to them. "First off, the correct term is 'demi-humans'." Roman said to them. "Second, as you can clearly see, they were infected too." He pointed towards Jaden, Atticus, and Aster. "Yeah. Jasmine's even a mermaid demi-human and Mindy's a cat beastkin demi-human." Syrus added.
It was then he realized what Roman said.
"Wait." He then turned to the wizard. "Roman, what did you mean by 'infected'?" He asked.
"That's what we came here to tell you." Billie said as she went to Syrus's side. "The Wizard Tribunal and World Monster Council discovered that there is an anti demi-human movement. By the time they discovered them, the movement tried to create some kind of device to turn demi-humans into regular humans. But, as you can see, it backfired on them, big time."
"What!?" It was clear that Syrus was freaking out about this new information.
"On the bright side, wizards like Billie and Roman, supernatural beings like me and Demi, and those who were born demi-humans like a certain someone here, don't have to hide who we really are anymore!" Vee said.
"And my family doesn't have to hate and hunt every kind of supernatural being. We'll just hunt the actual evil ones." Elijah said. "Who will be doing a lot! My aunt and uncle were dealing with ten cases when I talked to them before I left with the others to tell you Sy."
"And they'll be working with the Demi-Human Crimes Division, who will ensure they will only go after actually evil and criminal supernatural creatures." Sophie said. "Which reminds me, Syrus." She looked towards the sky-blue haired demi-human werewolf. "Do you think you can talk to that school friend of yours from your previous school? Kurtz, was his name right?" Billie then looked at him. "Oh yeah! You told us you made some more friends at your previous school! And one of them, despite his age, was a detective for the Demi-Human Crimes Division!"
"Can you guys please stop making it seem like a big deal when you guys talk about me making friends!?" Syrus said to them. But Billie, Vee, and Demi kept on teasing him, so Syrus ended up chasing the three of them.
"Uh....." Jaden, Hassleberry, Atticus, Aster, Chazz, Alexis, and Bastion were completely confused and slightly shocked at how Syrus was acting.
"Why are you so confused?" Roman asked them. "Because, except when he started a rivalry with Hassleberry over who will be Jaden's best friend, we've never seen Syrus act like that." Atticus explained to them, causing the four people who Syrus wasn't chasing to look at them before casting a glance at him. "So Syrus really decided to hide who he really was from everyone here?" Winter said, causing the Duel Academy students to look at them. "What do you mean?" Aster said. "You see, the Syrus you see now, a werewolf demi-human chasing after those three because of their teasing, is 100% the real Syrus." Sophie said. "And his a wizard."
The others then looked at Syrus in shock.
Not believing that Syrus had such a big secret that he would have kept hidden from them if things were different.
