Chapter Text

“The devil is not as black as he is painted.”
Dante Alghieri

Lucifer Morningstar lounged in his club, a decadent reliquary of pleasure and sin. Velvet laughter curled around marble pillars. Crystal lights flashed with the promise of indulgence; bodies swayed to the slow heartbeat of jazz, each shadow caressing temptation. Lucifer savored the heat and shimmer, swirling amber liquid in a crystal glass, the very image of a king at ease on his throne.

Then the music faltered, notes smearing into silence. The air thickened; light hung unmoving, spilling gold and violet pools across the mahogany bar. Slowly, the whole room dimmed, as if the very clocks were holding their breath. Pleasure slowed and the world suddenly grew dark, every joy cast in long velvet shadow, every heartbeat echoing with portent.

With a small, delighted smile, Lucifer turned to greet the new presence behind him. A trembling hush hung behind Lucifer, then a new weight in the dark. The figure who materialized seemed caught on the cusp of sunset and shadow. Half his edges were radiant, half his silhouette lost to swirling gloom. His eyes shimmered a stony, perpetual twilight.

“Equinox,” Lucifer grinned, rising slightly from his seat, arms opened in delighted welcome. “Well, this is an honour. I’m surprised the Lords of Order and Chaos granted you shore leave. Here to sample the local depravity, or have you come to restore balance to my cocktail menu?”

“Spare me, Lucifer. Your pleasures are droll. Nothing I haven’t observed in passing epochs. Balance, after all, is not achieved over gin and jazz.” Equinox’s eyes quirked at the corners, dry amusement flickering across them.

Lucifer tipped his glass in mock salute, eyes crinkling.

“Ouch, darling. Now you wound me. I always assumed even the cosmic accounting department appreciated a good Negroni and a little sin.”

“Order and Chaos must remain in harmony,” Equinox replied evenly. His voice was soft but rang in the bones, like the hush before a storm. “The eternal dance tips the scale, and the world buckles beneath the strain. You, of all beings, should understand what comes of unchecked indulgence.”

“Oh, I understand, I simply prefer my scales to be weighted with charm and a touch of reckless abandon. The world’s more fun when it teeters a little. Besides, don’t you tire of holding the leash? How does the universe’s metronome have any fun?” Lucifer raised an eyebrow, draping an ankle over his knee.

“Fun is chaos unmeasured. But too much light scorches; too much shadow swallows. Even you, Lucifer, are not exempt from consequence. For every ecstasy you spark in here, a heartbreak blazes out there.”

Lucifer clucked his tongue, feigning disappointment.

“Heartbreak is very much on the menu. It pairs exquisitely with loss and self-doubt, best enjoyed with a squeeze of lime. Now tell me darling, would you like the house special?”

“Balance isn’t a recipe,” Equinox replied, the corners of his mouth tugging again. “But perhaps, for once, it requires more than cosmic mathematics. Sometimes even gods must be weighed. Not measured only in power, but in the echoes they leave behind.”

“Careful, Equinox. You sound almost human.” Lucifer leaned forward, eyes gleaming, voice turning conspiratorial.

Equinox met his gaze, dusk swirling restlessly.

“And you, Morningstar, sound like you wish you were.”

Lucifer laughed, long and velvet-rich, tapping his glass to the marble.

“Heaven forbid! Now, I sense there’s more on your agenda tonight than existential critique. Out with it, before I start offering you a job.”

Equinox’s eyes glinted, silver-gray and ancient.

“Very well. I propose a wager. A true measure of devotion, obsession, and the havoc of imbalance. The Bat walks his path through fire, ever the martyr, doomed to die for a cause. The Kryptonian staggers, blinded by sunlight and sentiment. Let us see if loss tips the axis. When the Bat’s heart stops, does hope collapse, or does devotion defy fate?”

“Ah, stakes worthy of the house. If Gotham’s knight must perish, let’s see if even death keeps a World’s Finest man down. Are you betting on tragedy, then, Equinox? Or balance’s old delight, resurrection through grit and guilt?” Lucifer’s smile sharpened, sly and wicked.

“I wager only this: when Batman falls, balance holds its breath. If he finds his way back for Superman, not the world then perhaps love restores what law and power cannot.” Equinox inclined his head, and placed a heavy, ancient coin onto the polished mahogany bar.

Lucifer raised his glass in a toast, blue fire dancing atop amber.

“Done. Let death take the Bat and let’s see what moves the scales: a devil’s cleverness, a god’s hope, or a mortal heart too stubborn for the grave. I do adore a paradox.”

Notes:

I'm baaaaaaaaack~ <3 Miss me? Cause I certainly missed yoou!

Soooo this is a tale as old as time you see...I am obsessed with character studies, and high philosophical themes. I wanted to create a romantic, weird ass AU version where Bruce must navigate hell to save Clark and confront his demons.

The bet was the perfect framing device that allowed me to explore the themes of love, devotion, damnation, and confrontation with the deepest parts of the soul.

Aaaah it's delicious (๑ᵔ⤙ᵔ๑)

And don't worry, if you're unfamiliar with the work, you're in for a fun a ride and I will explain as much as I can in notes, along with literary analysis.

Notes

1. Equinox - for those that don't remember, Equinox was first introduced in Batman: Brave and the Bold and super quickly became my absolute favourite villain. Equinox was an orphan who was chosen by the Lords of Order and Chaos to create peace by keeping good and evil in check. Unfortunately, the pressure of Equinox's duty eventually drove him insane and he abandoned his masters to carry out his duty in a way that made sense to his twisted mind.

2. Lucifer - I wanted this Lucifer to be a blend from the TV series and the comics. No way he would turn down such an epic bet and would totally do it for the lulz.

3. The Divine Comedy - I am obsessed with this piece of literature. Written by Dante Alighieri possibly prior to 1308 and completed just before his death in 1321 (the exact dates are uncertain.) It was a super big deal. Originally written in Italian verse (poetry) instead of Latin (which was considered the high bougie language of the time in literature), it is considered by many to be an OG fanfic (though debatable depending on which literary circle you frequent). It's about Dante journeying through the depths of Purgatory, Hell, and Paradise and meeting various influential and famous people throughout history. He also wrote it as a way to cope with his impending exile from his beloved Florence.

4. Gustave Doré is a very famous illustrator and is responsible for the modern depictions of hell. His illustrations are one of my favourites and I highly recommend checking them out as you read through each Canto ✨
Check out the illustrations because they are stunning and I love them so much
