Chapter Text
Bound by Distance, Doomed by Love
... Gray's Dilemma ..
After the battle with Invel, and their brush with death, Gray finally understood that his fears had never been illusions. When Juvia chose to end her life before his eyes, casting her blood-transfer magic, she confirmed the one truth that had haunted him for years—that he would be the cause of her death… that he would lose her forever, just as he had lost everyone he had ever loved.
And worse… that she would always choose him over her own life.
That day stripped away every lie he had ever told himself. Refusing her was no longer enough. The battle itself had exposed him—his feelings laid bare for her and for the entire guild to see. He loved her. Just as deeply, just as completely as she loved him. Every cold word, every rejection… nothing but carefully built defenses, desperate attempts to push her away, to make her hate him enough to stay safe.
But Juvia never gave up.
No matter how high the walls he built, no matter how cruel his distance, she kept reaching. Tirelessly. Hopeful. Patient. Years passed, and still she stood there, unwavering—until, against all his efforts, she slipped through every crack and made a home in his heart… in his dreams.
And because of that, he was left with only one choice.
The hardest one he would ever make.
For her… he would make it without hesitation.
In the span between the moment he thought he had lost her forever, and the moment he heard her voice again—soft, alive, calling his name—Gray lived through a kind of torment he had never known. Less than an hour had passed… less than an hour between seeing her lifeless, drenched in blood… and hearing her again.
But to him, it felt like centuries.
Something inside him broke loose. As if he had been torn out of himself, leaving behind only the worst parts—the darkness he had buried for so long rising to the surface, swallowing everything. It spread through him, through every corner of his soul, until there was nothing left but shadow.
To lose her… was to lose himself.
And now, he understood exactly what that meant.
He understood what it would be like to never see her smile again… never hear her voice… never feel her presence, her warmth… never lose himself in the softness of her gaze, or the quiet comfort of her existence. He understood what it would mean for all of that to simply… vanish.
So he made his decision.
He would protect all of it.
Even if it meant destroying their love.
He would force her to live without him. To find a future that did not include his name. He would shatter every dream she had built around him… and reshape it, painfully, with someone else. Someone who could give her a life without fear… without death waiting at the edge of every moment.
He would make her stay five feet away from him.
He would take away even the simple comfort of touch.
He would cast a celestial separation spell—one that would make it impossible for them to be together… impossible to even reach for each other. And if they ever tried to break it…
It would kill them both.
Slowly. Painfully.
And when Gray made that decision… that night broke him.
He collapsed onto the cold floor of his room, clutching her pillow like it was the only thing keeping him from falling apart. He wore the shirt and scarf she had given him, holding onto them like fragile pieces of a life he was about to destroy. He cried—openly, helplessly—like a child who had nothing left.
To let her go… by his own will…
To force her to let go of him… when her love was the very thing that kept him alive…
To imagine another man standing where he had always dreamed to be. To imagine her smiling for someone else, building a life, a family… carrying children that would never be his…
Everything he had ever wanted… he would give it away.
For her.
He wrapped his arms around himself, shaking, staring at her picture as if it could answer the question tearing him apart. Every time he had rejected her before, there had always been a quiet hope—that she wouldn't give up. That somehow, his fears were wrong. That maybe… just maybe… he could still have a future with her.
But now…
This time, he would push her away for good.
No return.
No second chances.
And for the first time in his life… Gray felt that death would be kinder than the pain devouring him.
Only a few days remained.
And then… he would stand before her—the girl who had waited so long, who believed so fiercely—and he would tell her they had to part ways. Forever.
His tears only fell harder as he imagined her face… the way she would look at him, full of hope, waiting for the words she had dreamed of hearing.
"I love you."
But instead… those would be the same words that destroyed her.
He would hand her his love… laced with poison.
They would drink from it together… and kill it before it ever had the chance to live.
He would break her dreams with his own hands. Tear down everything she had built in her heart… with a coldness she would never understand.
God… he would make her miserable.
He would make her hate the moment she ever met him.
And somewhere between his sobs… Gray laughed bitterly, whispering to himself:
"You'll lose her anyway."
His voice broke into a raw, exhausted cry—as if the past had returned all at once, every loss he had ever endured crashing into him in a single moment.
Losing Juvia would end everything good left in him.
It would erase every trace of hope.
It would silence every heartbeat.
Her loss would be the beginning of her life…
And the end of his.
