“I—well. It’s been a while, that’s all.” Phainon laughs softly. “Who knew we’d find the last uncorrupted path to the coast by chance.”
He’s so enamored with the sight Mydei almost feels guilty for the leaden pit digging into his chest.
Phainon, unwittingly, discovers the prince's weakness. Mydei, expectantly, isn't having any of it.

Summary
“Well,” is what Aglaea says at last. “This is certainly… a predicament.”
Her voice is as unreadable as ever, so it could mean anything from this is manageable to this is a disaster the likes of which the Flame-Chase Journey will never recover from. As things stand, Mydei is more inclined to believe the latter.
Beside them, Tribbie finally pops up from where she’s been studying their joined hands. “What Snowy said is true!” she proclaims in a voice far too cheerful for their current situation. “He and De are one hundred percent stuck to each other.”
While out on patrol, Mydei and Phainon get hit with a curse that binds their hands together.

Summary
It was a cultural miscommunication. The product of a cultural difference. Phainon was certain of it. After all, Phainon had hardly been aware of the implications when he first arrived in Okhema. It wasn’t until he attended a class on Okheman theatre at the Grove and they were halfway through analysing a play script from Era Bellica that he was exposed to the symbolism for the first time.
The girl next to him had taken pity and timidly whispered the answer to his question.
Throwing apples was a ploy at seduction.
By the way Mydei happily crunched at the apple perfectly matched to the one he had thrown with every intention for Phainon to catch, and the lack of scandalised attention from the surrounding Kremnoans, tossing apples clearly did not carry the same meaning in Kremnos as it did in Okhema.
A cultural difference over apples leads to some self-inflicted torture on Phainon’s behalf. After all, if Mydei is ignorant to the symbolism then there’s no harm to Phainon indulging in a little fantasy.

As Phainon tries to take his next step, his worn-out legs give out, and he falls to his knees. Panic immediately invades his mind, and his breathing grows even more ragged than it already was. He can’t stay here, out in the open. What if… What if he finds him?
Tears fill his eyes, and his gray tail thumps angrily against the ground. He can’t give up now, not when he’s already made it this far. He’d rather die than return to that awful lab and fall into Lygus’ clutches again.
Or chimera hybrid Phainon, exhausted and pregnant, finds unhoped-for safety and comfort when he accidentally falls into Mydei’s den.

Summary
Mydei has a room full of clothes anyway, Phainon thinks. She's not going to notice one pair of panties missing. Phainon adjusts his erection in his pants after he stuffs the garment into his pocket, hiding it the best he can before he flushes the toilet and washes his hands.
Phainon gets out of Mydei's house with swift intent, and an obscene article hidden on him. It's just one time. He won't think of it any further.
Phainon develops a dreadful perversion. Mydei finds out... eventually.

His hand slid under Phainon’s tank top, palm flat against his stomach. He felt the muscles jump beneath his touch. Mydei dragged his hand upward, deliberately slow, until his fingers brushed over a nipple, applying soft, teasing pressure.
Phainon gasped.
Mydei leaned over him, mouth near his ear again. “You keep on making those sounds,” he said. “You don’t even realize how hot they are.”
Phainon flushed red, hands flying up to cover his face.
Mydei chuckled, low and warm. “Don’t hide from me now.”
