I recently read that Oda said Zoro actually died at Thriller Bark, but got lost on his way to heaven or hell and wandered back to his body. This is my take on what happened when he was lost.

Summary
Sanji could easily admit that, among the crew, Zoro was someone that he respected only for his battle skills, but otherwise, didn't have any sort of relationship with. The fact that they hated each other's guts, and could barely go by without killing one another for ten seconds said it all.
Yet, something snapped inside of Sanji at the sight of the werewolf standing tall in that wrecked courtyard, proud, even when facing death.
That was only the beginning.
