Just in case anyone is trying to find a good alternative (for when you really do want to "just" privately categorize works): Use private bookmarks. Optionally, you can then add those bookmarks to a collection, but it's probably simpler to just tag the bookmarks and use bookmark search to find them later. You can tag bookmarks with whatever you want, and it doesn't even need to pertain to the work (it's probably not a good idea to write anything really private in the tags field, because I think they might be visible to wranglers, but other than that, nobody is going to see or care about tags on private bookmarks).
