      OTW/AO3 has a volunteer legal committee that does a lot of great work to protect fair use and noncommercial fan expression! They talk about it some here: https://www.transformativeworks.org/our-projects/legal/

      It feels a lot more secure to me to write fic than it would have 15 or 20 years ago, when situations like with Anne Rice were both more common and more recent, and my perception is a lot of that shift is thanks to the OTW's legal advocacy work. I don't think that number means there are no threats to transformative fandom any more - just that there are passionate experts giving their support to us as a gift. :)
