Summary
Winter break and a conveniently absent father makes Charlie’s place the perfect choice for a sleepover—according to Louis and Lisa, that is.

Summary
There’s a stack of letters addressed to her that go unanswered. The envelope reads Charlie Summers, her name written in a familiar hand. The letters stay at the periphery of her daily life, kept out of sight yet diligently preserved.
Charlie doesn’t mean to leave them unanswered. It’s just hard to send letters with no address. How is she meant to send letters with no clue as to their destination, with no idea if the recipient will read them at all?
Even if she knew, it’s harder still to put a pen to paper and come up with words in the first place, to write something that isn’t accusatory, isn’t resentful.
Do you realize what you did, by leaving?
You’ve made us liars.Something that isn’t mournful.

Summary
The only under bed monster at Lucian's birthday party seems to be Charlie herself. James rides Lucian on his back, bursting with laughter, and does not think at all about what he takes away with his frivolous presence.

Summary
James Hardford was a bastard.
Surely there must be some sort of virus coded into his brain to make him so unbearable. There had to be a reason why he essentially dedicated his life to make Charlie's miserable.
Jason had been a good father when he was around, but he had always acted like he never truly grew up. He would make jokes and play with Charlie, but he never truly knew how to be a fully functioning adult.

Summary
“We will be going on an overnight trip to a nearby town for the end of this lesson.” The professor spoke from where he stood, his beer belly pooling over the tight pants as his balding head gleamed under the sunlight. Momentarily blinding most of the students, a faint murmur of snickers crowded the classroom.
Charlie zoned ahead; she had many excuses on why she couldn’t go. Though usually, she could say her family couldn’t afford the fee, and the teachers wouldn’t care enough to let her elaborate, merely nod their heads with faux sympathy and pat her off.
It was how she liked it, no unnecessary words. Just simple and easy.
“Can’t skip either, part of a grade.” His words halted Charlie’s thought process. Looking up, she saw him glance at her.

Or: Charlie didn't really plan on going on an overnight trip, especially with those two. -

As the tape finally disappears into its slot and the familiar loud whirring of the rewind fills the room, Lucian sits back on his knees, practically bouncing in anticipation.
And then it began to play.
While Charlie is out job hunting, Lucian finds a VHS tape. By the end of watching it, Lucian learns a few things about Charlie, and must confront uncomfortable feelings regarding his deceased mother and family as a whole.
