Summary
Hancock sneaks off while the others are occupied. Finds that Nora hadn’t gone far. She’s just outside the bar with a cigarette between her fingers.
“Oh, you’re being bad,” he announces his presence.
She rolls her eyes at him teasingly. “No one will ever believe you.”
He grins. Accepts the cig when she offers it and takes drag. To see her take it back and put it between her lips when his mouth had just been on it makes him feel…some sort of way. Dizzy? Fluttery? Something dumb.
“Sorry about,” she gestures towards the bar, “that.” She lets out a soft sigh. “Piper doesn’t have a filter when she’s sober, let alone buzzed.”
“Was that actually the conversation?”
She presses her lips together. “Not so bluntly, but…”

About a month has passed since he left Goodneighbor to follow her. Best decision he ever could’ve made, if he’s being honest. And he doesn’t have to hide with her. She lets him be himself. No judgement. He likes to think she’s comfortable enough to be herself, as well. And they are open with each other. Honest. No holds barred.
Until, that is, she crosses a line he thought was a wall.
“Is that what we are? Friends?”
The question hits him like a punch to the gut. He chuckles nervously. “I like to think we’ve become fast friends, sure.”

She hums, looking at the others. “Thoughts?” She tilts her head. “Is this particular person deserving of my time and company?”
Piper has covered her mouth with her hands, clearly trying not to laugh. Deacon looks like he wants to disappear, and Nick doesn’t seem all too interested in participating in this conversation, either.
“Uh… How obvious do you want us to be?” Mac asks.

John Hancock had always been a vulgar man. As a person, he was always interested in curves, an opposition to his lingering harshness. The curves of bodies, no matter what equipment they had. The curve of his fingers in said bodies. The curves of pillows the morning after they left, the indents, the absence in the bedding that was always left. The curves of beer bottles, curves of mouths on bottles, on other things. Nora’s curves. Not just the way the vault suit hugged her, not just the way her body still held onto good, pre-wasteland feeding. It was more than that, and that was the part that Hancock hated.

Her jaw is clenched. “Yeah? That’s what you think of me? Fine.” She gestures around them. “Welcome home, Mayor, because you’re not traveling with me again. If you wanna run away, you can leave on your own fucking terms.”
And just as quickly as she had come into his life, she left it.
