Summary
Grace thought he had adjusted well enough to life on Erid. He had his best friend, a biodome for himself, a job, and he was not dying, which was a pleasant bonus. Everything had worked out, and he was content living the rest of his life among the Eridians, until they detected a strange, impossible transmission from a starless patch of the universe, and Grace just had to look into it.
Simon wonders why he ever accepted to be part of the convict realization program in the first place, when he knew full well they would have just sent him to die.
He just wanted to live.Despite being universes apart, they were Seen. Through signals, they met.

OR: Grace and Rocky track a distress signal from a human not far from Erid and get wormhole'd straight into the Iron Lung universe. No one is happy about this, especially Grace who's very much not prepared to deal with -gestures broadly- THIS.Loosely inspired by The Great Tribulation by aloremrem, thanks to them this went from 'Simon gets thrown onto the Hail Mary' to 'Grace and Rocky get sent to hell'. The plot is different, but the inspiration is there so I'm crediting aloremrem anyway.

Summary

Now free from their cell, the last Undead to whom he had granted freedom refused to let him fade away into the Abyss.
A retelling of Dark Souls following the path walked by Idris, an Astoran knight locked away in the Undead Asylum, before being given a second chance.

(This is the old version of the story. It's being rewritten, as my writing style has changed considerably!)

Ch.12 excerpt:
"“Ah-mmmm I…” A rasping wet gulp of air, a whined note of pain to place a plosive consonant against a misaligned alveolar ridge. Grace could feel an empathetic echo ache on the left side of his own face, the thought of exposed gum and muscle forced to move, the cracking of newly formed scabs, enough to make him feel nauseous. Simon screwed his eye shut, “D- ehm-d?”
It took a moment of gathering the sounds and rolling through them in his head, brain making comparisons and approximations when they weren’t good enough to work the noises into one coherent phrase. Ah-mmmm I d-ehm-d? Am I d-ehm-d? Am I deh-d?
Am I dead?"

Still trying to save their respective planets, Grace and Rocky gain a new problem they need to solve: the body of impossible human being appearing in the Hail Mary's airlock. Things slowly get worse from there.
Or: It's not enough to want to live. You have to make a choice.

"Bad. Stupid, very stupid." Grace can still hear Rocky's automated laptop-voice through the closed airlock door. "If Grace body poisoned by 'foreign contaminant', Grace die, contaminate spread and Rocky die—"
There's more blood smudged on the floors, the walls, leading up, up...Oh. There's a handprint. A handprint of blood. There's no way that could have happened without Grace realizing.
Rocky's still rambling on in the background: "—Adrian die, Stars-Erid-Earth die, all die because Grace is stupid."
Grace can hardly believe the conclusion he's about to draw. "I think someone's on the ship."
"Repeat words. I was narrating Grace-Rocky future."
"Rock, someone's on the ship."

Summary
"So he's really paralyzed?" Simon asks.
"Oh? Uh, yeah." Grace turns back to Rocky's sleeping form and gestures broadly at him.
Rocky is curled at the bottom of his tunnel, legs at his sides, body resting on the ground.
Simon nods, looking uncomfortable. "So he won't interrupt."
"Nah, he can't, he's– huh?" Grace fumbles for his glasses in earnest now. His heart rate picks up, but he's sort of hoping he's wildly misinterpreting what he just heard.
"Sit back down." Simon growls as Grace goes to stand up.
Slowly, Grace sits back down on the floor. He looks Simon over again and realizes, with a panicked flutter in his stomach that quickly spreads through his limbs like ice water, that Simon is holding a razor blade.

Grace & Rocky decide to go check out an SOS call. It could have gone better. (Trust me, eventual codependent friendship all around.)

"I just wanted to live… Was that so wrong?" The stranger asks, and it's clear that they aren't talking to Grace and Rocky anymore. Maybe they never were. "They didn't even ask for my name. They killed me and they didn't even care about who I used to be."
Grace and Rocky find a submarine on their way to Erid. Unfortunately, the strange man inside is barely coherent, and he doesn’t even look human.
