In this universe, Rocky offers to help create a food Ryland can eat during their journey on the Hail Mary together by hybridizing Ryland's DNA with food from his planet. As a result, Ryland begins taking on... different traits. Traits that make it possible for him and Rocky (and eventually, Adrian) to get closer than any of them ever thought they would be while the three of them start a life together on Erid.

Logan recalled how off putting it felt to hear themself as a ‘he.’ Such a simple word it was with only one syllable and two letters. And yet, when pit against the new challenger in the ring, Logan surrendered to the fact that thinking of themself as neither ‘he’ nor ‘she’, but ‘they’ struck an unexplainable sense of satisfaction within. Akin to a finished puzzle piece laid on the ground or a solved rubix cube in one’s palm, Logan felt as though they had finally plucked the answer they had been missing all this time.

After a lifetime of walking, they spot him. It looks like nothing at first, a speck of color in an endless expanse of white, but then it unfolds into a shape, sprawled on the ground, and then Virgil is running at full speed, Remus right at his heels.
Roman is a splash of red on white, and for a long moment Virgil thinks he’s wearing crimson clothes, until he realizes it’s blood. He curses and reaches for Roman, who is laying lax and broken, and doesn’t react when Virgil carefully taps his shoulder, and then his face.
“Fuck, Princey, come on,” he hisses, and carefully drags Roman close, resting his head on his lap and surveying the damage.
And there is a lot of it.
His clothes are soaked in blood, and the smell is so pungent it makes nausea rise up in his throat. There’s slashes in his arms, in his torso, even in his face. It’s like he got into a fight with a tiger and lost.
God, Virgil hopes it’s not that. He doesn’t know what he hopes it is.

He lies that he’s as cold and vicious as people say, because solitude is better than being prey. He lies that his name is based off of his middle name - he doesn’t even have one - because people rarely call him what he tells them to unless there’s a reason that can be put down on an official document. He lies and feigns indifference, because he’s done with being bullied for that kid who likes poetry and theater and philosophers older than grandparents.
He lies and lies and lies and lies until no one knows what is true.
He lies that he doesn’t care to meet his soulmates. That’s the biggest lie of them all.
Because despite his cynicism and pessimism and everything else in between, he can’t help but hope that when he meets his soulmates, they’ll take him away from all the lies.
He does wonder sometimes, though, if he’s lying to himself by even considering that a possibility.
After all, who could love a liar?

Deceit and the cold didn’t mix. He knew that. That’s why he layered, why he wore gloves, why he rarely left his room or interacted with the others at all. Not that he’d hibernate - as you’d expect him to do, with the cold-blooded shit. No, what happened to him was much worse than just falling asleep.

Afterwards Rocky reassured me that it is pretty common for pebbles to earn their first nicks and cracks at that age. Their outer shell isn’t fully developed yet and not quite as hard as that of an adult. He proudly showed me various indents and hairline fractures on his own body, telling me about how he got them in his youth during adventures with his friends or just messing around.
It’s a sign of growth, he told me. A sign of getting older and maturing.
Not a big deal. Happens all the time.
I believe him. Tori was in good spirits afterwards. Their crying was more because of the shock and the scare, not any actual pain. We finished the rest of the day without any further incidents and then I wished them all a happy holiday and returned to my home and got into bed.
Where I stayed for the next eighteen hours.
