We're almost at Erid. I have to tell him before we get in range of whatever radio-equivalent they use. He deserves to know, to have the chance to tell everyone before I land. He should know I’m a coward before he convinces his planet to funnel all their resources into keeping me alive.
I've thought it through so many times, in the years since I remembered.
‘Hey Rocky, I need to tell you something.’
‘Hey Rocky, you know how you always call us brave? Well…’
‘Hey Rocky so the actual reason I had amnesia when I met you was because I said no when they asked me to save my planet even though I was the only qualified candidate and they forced me to and I said if they sent me I'd kill everyone by sabotaging the mission so Stratt gave me some insane amnesia drug.’
Not exactly a conversation anyone wants to have ever, let alone with their roommate in a ship with no escape. Not something anyone wants to hear from the person they're relying on to save their people, either.

“Adrian will understand,” Rocky says confidently. “Will be excited to meet alien. Will be excited to meet person who brought me home.”
“Yeah, and I'm excited to meet them too, but after that!” Is this a translation error? A cultural miscommunication? How is Rocky not getting it? “You're partners. They're not going to want some alien around while you're, like… going on dates and all that.”
“Does not mean no time for Grace.” Rocky’s starting to sound frustrated. Part of me feels bad, but the rest is just as frustrated. “Why think this, question? On Earth, just abandon friends when have mate, question?”
It's so clearly a rhetorical question, to which the answer is obviously supposed to be no, of course not. I freeze up anyway.

“You ate some of it?” I ask, rudely. I’m too irate to mind my language. Who do they think they are? That meat is for Grace. In a way, that meat is Grace.
“Yes,” ♫♬♯♩♩♫ says. They and the rest of the human life support thrum know better than to be offended by my occasionally strange behaviour. “Obviously we weren’t going to risk the life of Honoured Grace on a completely untested technology.”
That doesn’t mean much. There’s a lot of things that are safe for ingestion by Eridians that would outright kill a human.
Trust Grace, I remind myself. He’ll have thought of all this.

Nothing destroys proper negotiations like a language barrier, even more so when you're relying on magical translation arrays. Add in the high stakes of a magically binding contract, the cursed Fenton Luck, and a self-sacrificing man who didn't have the good sense to wait before he fell on his own batarang? You had the combination for a wonderfully disastrous misunderstanding.

“How,” Clockwork asked, “did you even manage that?”
“I don’t know!” Danny tossed his arms sharply into the air in exasperation as he explained, “I just asked for his name!"
"You asked for more than that."
