Summary
"Whitaker."
It's the use of his last name that stops him. It's the use of his last name here that stops him.
He's Whitaker within the walls of the Pitt. He's Dr. Whitaker in front of patients. The occasional Huckleberry at central, when everyone can benefit from a small laugh at the nickname. But here? Inside Robby's home, where he's painstakingly carved out a corner over months- his favorite mug in the cabinet, an extra toothbrush in the holder, a take-out menu to some stupid restaurant they said they wanted to try together hanging on the fridge. Nothing big, nothing obtrusive. Just enough to place a shaking, smeared fingerprint in the footnotes of Robby's life. Here? Where he'd finally begun to feel like maybe he should start keeping a spare change of his clothes in the half-empty bottom drawer of the dresser?
Here, it's a death sentence. That "Whitaker."
-Or, Robby and Dennis break up. It's as simple and as complicated as that.

Summary
Dennis should’ve known it wasn’t permanent.
The seven week itch rumours never used to scare him, but now they do. His cruel distance had Dennis drowning, not only in his current misery but reviving traumas he thought he had long forgotten.
OR
Robby is stupid and hurts Dennis to ‘save him’ but doesn’t realise what a stubborn man he is. (With the encouragement of Trintiy of course…)

Summary
Dennis gets shoved. It shouldn't mean anything. It does.
A week later he coughs a petal into his palm and understands exactly how much trouble he is in.
He does what he always does. He keeps working. He tells no one. He bleeds quietly into his sleeves and lets Robby's hands and Robby's voice ease the pain just enough to function, and he does not let himself think about what that means.

Summary
Dennis takes a deep breath in to calm himself, but as he breathes out, he confesses, “Trinity made a bet with Samira that I could get anyone in the bar to buy me a drink because I kind of have a knack for it, but Samira chose you, and now they’re watching us, and I’m so sorry.”
His boss blinks at him a couple of times, probably figuring out the least problematic way to fire him or berate him for being so damn unprofessional. He should’ve just said no to Trinity and Samira and killed the vibes for the night; he’d prefer that to whatever Robby is about to say. He can already see the anger bubbling up inside him that’s going to—
“I’ll buy you a drink.”
Dennis stares at him, unblinking. After a few seconds, he manages to ask, “What?”
“I’ll buy you a drink,” Robby repeats, then leans over to pat the bar stool next to him. “But you’re going to have to earn it.”
-:-:-:-:-:-
Or, Dennis tries every trick in the book to get Dr. Robby to buy him a drink and to stay.

Summary
The Pitt had always changed. People came, people went. That was the nature of teaching hospitals. Residents moved on. Attendings retired. Nurses transferred. Life continued. Yet lately it felt different, like things were happening too fast. Like every time Robby got attached to someone, the universe immediately started preparing to take them away. He should have been used to it by now, but it didn’t make the pain hurt any less...
...All he could think about was Dennis leaving. Not tomorrow, not next month, not even next year. But eventually. Inevitably. Residency would end, and then he'd go.
Or, Robby overhears Dennis talking about leaving The Pitt, and his abandonment issues rise to the surface.

Summary
Four years have passed since Dennis Whitaker first walked into the Pitt as a nervous intern who couldn’t seem to stay out of trouble.
Now he’s in his final year of residency, more confident, more capable, and entirely too comfortable arguing with Michael Robinavitch when he thinks he’s right. Somewhere between endless shifts, impossible cases, bad coffee, and the kind of trust that only comes from working side by side for years, they’ve become something more than attending and resident.
Something more than friends, too.
The problem is that neither of them knows what to do about it.
As graduation approaches and job offers begin arriving from hospitals across the country, the future suddenly stops looking as certain as it once did. Dennis tells everyone he’s still weighing his options. Robby tells himself that wherever Whitaker ends up is none of his business.
Both of them are lying.
Or:
Four years of denial, one impending graduation, and a future neither of them is ready to face.
⸻
Slow burn Hucklerobby set during Whitaker’s final year of residency.
