“Yusuf,” he says in the soft, private tone he reserves for Joe. “You should have woken me.”
“You need to rest.”
“I need to be with you.” If it were anyone else, Nicky would leave it be. He would offer a shoulder to lean on and a sympathetic ear, yet he would leave when told to. But this is Joe. Nicky lowers himself to the floor next to him. “There will be time for rest later.”
It’s not a guarantee, a fact they’re well aware of, but Nicky lets himself believe it with enough fervor for them both. Centuries holding each other in the wake of atrocities no soul is meant to endure have shaped them together. Nicky ebbs where Joe flows, and when one can’t see a hopeful future, they’ll follow the other toward it blindly.
After escaping Merrick’s lab, the guard finds a place to lay low and pick up the pieces of their family.

Summary
"So, are you guys dating?" Nile asks during their lunch break. They are at the Indian buffet, and Nicky is telling Nile about a thrift store he and Joe went to that he thinks she would like. It takes a him a minute to parse the question. "Well, you keep mentioning him and smiling," she adds when he doesn't say anything. "And you haven't been seeing anyone for a while, so I just wondered if that was why."
"No, not at all," Nicky says. "We're friends, and he lives nearby, that's all."

Nicky shrugs, but reaches out to hold them. The fabric looks even more delicate in Nicky’s big, ink-covered hands. “I’ve never…” he cuddles back into Joe’s hold, and Joe wraps his arms around Nicky’s waist to hold him tighter. “I’ve never tried anything like this, really. Not like you.”
Joe bites back the retort that as a lingerie model, most people don’t wear this stuff as often as he does. He kisses Nicky’s neck instead and asks: “Do you want to try?”
Nicky is silent for a long moment. Eventually he nods. “Yeah. Yeah, okay.”
