Ilya was only a few strides behind Shane on the ice.
He clocked the angle before the hit even landed; Marlow coming in too hot, too fast, shoulder high. Shane turned and slowed at the wrong moment, skates clipping, balance gone.
Impact.
The sound carried oddly through the arena, duller than boards, sharper than ice. Shane went down hard, helmet skidding, body twisting. And then it all happened at once. Skates tangled. Marlow stumbled over him as he fell, too. A skate’s blade flashed too close, too sharp.

Shane's injuries during the Boston/Montreal game are much more life-threatening than in canon. Ilya's quick thinking and bone-deep instincts are the only reason he survives.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“You always say you are sorry. But you never stop doing it. I move to shitty team, I get upset at shitty team and you feel guilty, you say sorry but you don’t understand when I complain.” He was raising his voice again and his grasp on English was getting worse by the minute.
“That’s not fair.”
“You say you are sorry about my family but then you do not understand what I have to say when we talk about families! It’s always your mom is too pressing or too worried. Guess what Shane! I do not have a mom to press me!”or
Shane accidentally breaks something important for Ilya. Instead of reacting like he usually would, Ilya, already tired from a part argument, starts shouting at him eveything he's ever been upset about. Shane can't stand it and finds himself safe wording out of the argument. Fluff ensues.

“What do you mean, your catfish?” Ilya angles the phone so Sveta can see the shirtless picture on the screen.
“This guy is pretending to be Shane Hollander on Grindr. It’s pretty funny. He’s cropped the face out, but he’s using pictures from the billboard next to my apartment.”
Or: Ilya Rozanov is sure he's being catfished- why would the real Shane Hollander be on Grindr, talking to random university of Ottawa students? But the more he talks to Wayne, the more he starts to like him, and the more he wishes Wayne would just come clean so they can finally be together.

Summary
Shane Hollander loves playing for the Ottawa Centaurs. Leaving Montreal, as painful as it had been, really has been one of the best decisions he’s ever made.
He gets to play with his husband. He’s supported at all levels, from upper management down to the most casual of fans, and his teammates are genuinely kind and lovely people who care about him and his life and are invested in his well-being.
Considering where he came from, Shane thinks it’s wonderful to work with such caring players who want what’s best for him and notice things about his life. It's really, really great.
Until it isn’t, of course.
“Hollander, what the fuck is that on your face?” Zane Boodram asks in the locker room while they’re changing for game five of the first round of playoffs.

To Ilya, it seemed like a lot of unnecessary effort and a high risk of mosquito bites when they could just buy a pack of skewers and be done with it.
But, like with everything that came with Shane Hollander, Ilya had learned to love it.

Ilya was already looking at him when Shane glanced over, wearing that stupidly fond smile. Shane felt his own lips twitch in response before he could help it.
"Is very good question, actually," Ilya announced to the room. "Hard to say exact moment." He tilted his head. "But pretty fast, I think."
Shane's chest clenched. The classroom full of nine-year-olds dissolved. Max's mortification somewhere in the background didn't register.
For a moment, Shane was seventeen years old again, watching Ilya Rozanov highlights for the tenth time that week and running out of ways to explain why.
"Yeah," Shane said, voice catching slightly. "Pretty fast."
Shane and Ilya attend career day at their son's elementary school. It ends with Shane going off on another parent and embarrassing their son.

"Everyone has a mad voice," Ilya said wisely, reaching for a fresh bobby pin. He gathered up the loose strand that had slipped free and started over, completely unruffled by the looming deadline. "You get yours from your dad."
"I don't have a mad voice."
The statement came from the doorway. Shane stood there holding Mila's tiny pink cardigan—the one with the pearl buttons that perfectly matched her leotard—draped over one arm. He was fully dressed now, ready to go. White dress shirt tucked in, navy tie perfectly straight, the silver tie clip Ilya had given him years back catching the morning light streaming through the window.
Nobody responded.
They all knew better.
Or,
Ilya and Shane’s daughter’s first ballet recital happens to fall on International Women's Day. A holiday that Ilya takes very seriously.
