Summary
There's a tearful but proud smile on Cas' lips as he grips Dean's shoulder and says, "Goodbye, Dean," as if these are the last words Dean is supposed to hear from him. Heavy, poignant, definitive.
After all of… everything he just told Dean?
Oh, hell, no.
Dean jostles himself out of his daze to make a split-second decision. Digs his heels in, loops his right arm around Cas' middle and tackles him like this is a rugby game; dislodges him completely as dark, gooey tentacle-y extensions shoot out of the portal and over their heads.
They stumble and fall and watch as Billie is wrapped up in black ooze. The portal pulses as it swallows her, and then it vanishes.
Cas sits on the floor, his back against one of the shelves, one knee propped up, and stares at Dean with wide eyes.
"Now what?" Dean asks, on his knees in front of Cas, still breathless, wiping tears from his cheeks as he looks around, waiting for the Empty to notice its mistake and return to snatch Cas away from him, after all.

Summary
Before Jack zips off to give world peace a try, Dean stops him. “What about Cas?” he says, less of an afterthought and more of a reminder that, hey, they’re sort of an incomplete family here.
Sam, catching on, asks, “Can you pull him out?”
The stare Jack levels them with is peaceful. “No,” he says, and Dean feels the earth shift beneath his feet for one very long second before Jack sets his gaze squarely on him, his eyes piercing. “But you can.”
(A post-finale fix-it fic where Dean doesn't die. Instead, he pulls Cas out of the Empty. Eventually, after the reunion, there's romance and a road trip, but not specifically in that order.)

Dean sits with that for a moment. He’s not sure what to make of it. The one thing he does know, is that he never could have predicted the conversation would be that.
“Okay…?” Dean says slowly.
“I know it’s a ridiculous thing to say,” Cas says. He talks about it in a way that’s far away from himself, as if the issue doesn’t concern him. “But I wanted you to know.”

Summary
Dean is so determined to be normal about Cas and what Cas said, so determined for things to get back to normal, that he starts counting his victories. First, he can touch Cas just like he did before--easy. He can comfort him after a nightmare--no problem. He doesn't even think about the fact that Cas is in love with him when Dean's moving around the bunker post-shower, as dressed down as he ever got before, just boxers and his robe closed over them. He's not even worried. Not even thinking twice about what Cas might see. Very natural, very cool; he can be cool about this.
It's just that, along with that, he can't stop thinking about the fact that Cas is in love with him. And when they start watching that fucking schmoopy ass show with Jack, Dean can't stop thinking about that kid, Nick, and where his story's going to go. Why does it matter so much to him anyway?

Summary
Dean did a lot of thinking about when and how he would get Cas back. Months of it, actually, stretching into a year, because while Sam and Eileen were settling into their new lives, Dean was stuck. He was stuck in a faraway corner of the bunker, dark and empty and hollow, ringing with the sound of a vibrating phone.
So when he falls to his knees in that same room, exhausted, hurting, breathless, and he feels a hand on his shoulder and looks up to see Cas, he realizes that he doesn't have a single clue about what to do now. Getting Cas out had been easy--actually, it'd been the opposite of that--but the planning of it, the methodical desperation of one attempt after the other had been a familiar rhythm. It'd been soothing almost, solid, something to focus on that wasn't Cas's eyes, watery and jubilant in a way Dean hadn't ever seen that up close on anyone, let alone Cas.
And now Cas is pulling him to his feet, and Dean's stumbling, and he instinctually grabs Cas's arm, and his hand lights up with a fire that he isn't prepared for.
"Hello, Dean."

“Hi, Jody,” Sam says.
“Howdy, boys.” She asks them to take over a case. Something about werewolves. Dean doubts they will, Sam hasn’t let him pick up a gun in months, not since their last hunt.
Jody’s voice cuts through the phone. “Alright, if you boys don’t wanna take the case, I’ll see if Castiel will, but I think he’s helping Claire in Colorado–”
Dean doesn’t hear a damn thing after that, and by the looks of it, Sam doesn’t either. For the first time in days, Dean opens his mouth and speaks. “Cas is alive?”
Jody’s voice is quiet on the other end. “He didn’t tell you?”
